Multiplatform systems for the enterprises by smeup

Technology evolves at the speed of light, and smeup knows it well. To stay abreast of the times, limiting costs and containing upgrade times, the Italy-based company is working on the Multiplatform system project. The aim is to open up to the cloud computing to make the ERP management system work on open platforms, moving from RPG to Java.

Why choose a multiplatform system?
First and foremost, to get around the disadvantages associated with legacy applications: particularly knowledge drain, which affects applications, languages, and vendor lock-in. Cloud platforms have higher scalability and online availability, so it is easier to find developers familiar with the patterns.

Among the outstanding number of advantages of the RPG code, it’s worth mentioning here that:

(a) it runs everywhere and is therefore very flexible;
(b) it is extensible;
(c) it is replaceable - even in pieces - with Java code;
(d) it does not have the constraints of AS400, resulting in reduced costs and limitations;
(e) allows direct, native access to any database.

The core of the smeup multiplatform systems is the separation of technology and application, which allows the former to be easily upgraded without touching the latter.

Since the system is not dependent on AS400, it enables higher business scalability, with better balance between development costs and benefits, as well as the huge advantage of access to open-source software written by others. On the client side, the software is more modern, flexible, fast and efficient, making it possible to carry out projects that were once unthinkable.

For the platform to work at its best, it is necessary to use an intERPpreter: smeup has chosen JaRIKo as the intERPreter of the RPG programming language. This works as the “engine” of the multiplatform, receiving the RPG code one line at a time and executing it on top of the Java virtual machine (which is a machine that uses Java, but in this case executes RPG code).

Through its in-depth knowledge of the web and programming, smeup is able to build flexible and dynamic systems to meet customers' needs on both the medium and long term.
