Officina Bonacina expands cold working capabilities

Officina Bonacina has recently enhanced its production capabilities with the installation of a new GFR RTI-50 BASE thread rolling machine. This investment marks another step in the company’s continuous evolution, which until now has exclusively produced threads through chip removal machining.

Thanks to this technology, the company can now also offer threads obtained through cold rolling, a process that provides advantages in terms of quality, strength, and sustainability.

Advantages of thread rolling over traditional thread cutting

Thread rolling is a cold plastic deformation process in which threads are formed by applying high pressure with rollers onto a steel bar, without material removal. This method offers several advantages, including:

- greater mechanical strength: the cold deformation process improves surface finish and increases thread fatigue resistance.
- high precision and repeatability: rolling ensures consistent geometry and excellent surface finish, reducing dimensional errors.
- environmental sustainability: unlike thread cutting, rolling does not produce machining waste, optimizing material usage.

Capabilities of the New GFR RTI-50 BASE thread rolling machine and processable materials

With the introduction of this technology, Officina Bonacina can now produce fully or partially threaded bars with thread pitches ranging from 2 to 6, and a maximum processable length of 6 meters.

The new thread rolling machine allows the processing of a wide range of materials, including carbon steels (S275JR, S355J2, C45), heat-treated steels (39NiCrMo3, 42CrMoS4, B7), and stainless steels (AISI 304, AISI 316).
