Transworld Engineering: variable-diameter and constant-force springs
After a series of technical articles on spring manufacturing, Transworld Engineering has recently published a new column regarding variable-diameter springs and constant-force springs.
In the “Variable diameter springs” paper, Transworld Engineering focuses on the advantages and the typical application scenarios of this type of elastic component. In particular, thanks to their peculiar geometry, variable diameter springs are perfect for high-end mattresses, vehicle suspension systems, and battery compartments. The springs’ characteristics are determined by two factors. Firstly, by the minimum distance between two adjacent coils: the bigger the diameter of the wire, the larger the distance. Secondly, by the coils’ deflection, which decreases with increasing wire diameter. Thus, the adjacent coils will be closer and closer, and the general stiffness will usually increase.
Instead, the “Constant force springs” article revolves around this particular type of spring used as a counterbalance in everyday applications to supply a retracting force for items such as self-closing doors, seat belts, and interior blinds.
