How to deal with machining debris in subtractive manufacturing

A closer look at MERCURY, the two-shafts shredder for chips and metal swarf

Despite the considerable progress in process technology, the main subtractive manufacturing operations, such as turning and drilling, still have some drawbacks, first and foremost the formation of machining debris - such as chips or metal swarf - which must then be removed and treated before disposal.

For this reason, SMART (S.M.A. Recycling Technology) has developed and launched on the market the two-shafts shredder MERCURY, specifically designed for the volumetric reduction of chips resulting from turning, drilling, milling, and other material-removal operations.

The machine can be equipped with a swarf washing and degreasing system, and installed line-side, thus solving all clogging issues and consequently increasing the efficiency of the machining centre.

Thanks to the different configurations and options available, MERCURY can be adapted to the best machine tools and lathes on the market. Moreover, the SMART two-shafts shredder can be arranged to work as a stand-alone unit, in conjunction with conveyor belts or loading and unloading systems, hence allowing it to treat chips coming from different machines.

In its stand-alone configuration, MERCURY can also perform the volumetric reduction of other materials, for those who do not have great production needs.

In the video below you can see the machine in action!
