High-speed ultrasonic wire cleaning, how does it work?

Ultrasonic cleaning has proven to be the most effective technology for removing drawing soaps and oil from wires. Widely utilized across various wire industry applications, it excels with stainless steel, carbon steel, copper, and aluminum wires, as well as profile and flat wires.

Sirio Wire, an Italy-based manufacturer of wire surface treatment plants, offers state-of-the-art solution in this field.

How does ultrasonic cleaning work?

Ultrasonic cleaning utilizes high-frequency sound waves to mechanically scrub the wire surface through a process called cavitation. Microscopic bubbles form, grow, and implode due to alternating pressure waves, releasing stored energy upon implosion. This energy generates jets that travel at high speeds toward the wire surface, effectively reaching and removing entrapped soils, even in small crevices.

Essential components of ultrasound cleaning systems

The core components of an ultrasonic cleaning setup comprise ultrasonic transducers, an electrical generator, and a tank filled with the cleaning solution. The generator produces high-frequency electrical impulses necessary to power the transducers, with higher frequencies yielding smaller cavitation bubbles. These transducers, typically made of PZT elements (Pb-Zr-Ti), convert electrical energy into mechanical vibrations through piezoelectric action. Positioned within a sealed stainless steel enclosure submerged in the cleaning bath beneath the wire field, the transducers are linked to the generator via a waterproof cable.

Advanced equipment for a flawless ultrasonic cleaning

For some applications (i.e. after-dry drawing, after rolling, pre-plasma furnace, and pre-extrusion stages), there's a demand for high-speed single wire cleaning. Sirio Wire addresses this need with a specialized ultrasonic transducer, delivering high ultrasound concentration while maintaining easy accessibility for cleaning. Additionally, deviation pulleys can be integrated to allow multiple passes through the cleaning bath, minimizing equipment length. The cleaning process is complemented by effective compressed air wiping and high-pressure rinsing, operating sequentially. Optional features include exhaust systems and containment tanks.
