An innovative horizontal continuous casting plant delivered by GMS
In July 2019, the Italian Metallurgica San Marco (MSM) has signed a contract with GMS (Global Metallurgical Solutions) for the supply of an innovative HCC plant (Horizontal Continuous Casting) intended for the production of special low lead brass alloy billets.
The plant has been supplied by GMS with an EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) formula that guarantees minimal involvement of the customer during the installation, start-up, and testing operations.
The production capacity of the plant is about 5.0 tons of ø290mm billets per hour.
This plant features an innovative automatic scrap loading system, a new crucible furnace, and a complete horizontal casting line—which can be fed both by the new crucible furnace and by the existing channel melting furnace supplied by Calamari (today GMS) back in the days. A billet unloading station directly connected to the MSM warehouse is included as well. An ultra-modern automation and control system, designed and built by GMS, completes the plant in harmony with the latest Industry 4.0 requirements. The GMS "Casting Management System" software controls in real-time all the process parameters, ensuring maximum safety for the operators and the reproducibility of the process, and therefore, of the product quality.
GMS also provides Advisory and Academy services that include quality parameters' stabilization activities, which are on their way to completion at this customer’s plant.
The significant automation level of the plants allows a continuous and more effective collaboration between the plant supplier and the user, as well as constant improvement of the OpEX and the OEE of the plant itself.
The choice of GMS proves, once again, the corporate expertise and the ability of the enterprise to provide its customers with complete technology packages.
