Road to 2030: ABS's tools for sustainability

Road to 2030: ABS's tools for sustainability

Sustainability is measured with concrete data. That’s why ABS - Acciaierie Bertoli Safau SpA adopts certified tools to analyze and improve its environmental impact. One of these is the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

EPD: what is the Environmental Product Declaration?

The EPD is a voluntary certification, verified and validated by independent bodies, which assesses environmental impact through various indicators across its life cycle (LCA - Life Cycle Assessment). Essentially, it serves as an environmental ID for a product or service.

ABS's product EPDs consider 30 impact indicators, including CO₂ Equivalent (Carbon Footprint), providing a more comprehensive view than just the CFP alone.

As of today, ABS has certified EPDs for the following products:

C80 Wire Rod

Produced from high-carbon steel, alloy steel, or specific steel for springs and bearings, with diameters ranging from ø5.0 to ø25.0 mm. It is derived from round billets (ø180-230 mm) or square billets (150-180 mm), mainly composed of scrap (89%), HBI (9.7%), and ferroalloys (1.3%). The production process includes melting in an electric furnace, ladle furnace treatment, vacuum degassing, and continuous casting, followed by reheating and hot rolling in an automated plant.

Ecogravel®

Ecogravel® is a certified and CE-marked artificial aggregate, produced from the melting slags of the ABS plant in Cargnacco. Used as an alternative to natural aggregates in concrete, asphalt, and civil engineering works, it improves adhesion and road safety while offering environmental benefits through the reuse of industrial slags.

Ecogravel® White

Unlike the classic Ecogravel® (derived from electric furnace slags), Ecogravel® White stands out for its high free lime content, allowing it to effectively replace lime in soil stabilization and consolidation, also serving as a binder. Ecogravel® White thus enhances an industrial by-product while preserving natural resources. This product is also manufactured at the Cargnacco plant.

Soon, four additional EPD certifications will be added for wire rod and bars, available for download in the dedicated section of the ABS website.
