Acciaierie di Calvisano to invest 13 million euros for a sustainable future
Acciaierie di Calvisano plant, part of Feralpi Group's special steels business unit and closely connected to the Caleotto rolling mill in Lecco, has recently launched an investment program of €13+ million. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This commitment is part of an integrated and strategic vision, where the two plants work in synergy to offer innovative and sustainable solutions, thereby reinforcing Feralpi Group’s position in the steel industry.
A step forward in emission reduction: the new fume extraction hood
One of the key projects funded by this investment is the installation of a new fume extraction hood. This upgrade has nearly tripled the plant's extraction capacity, from 2,720 to 7,350 cubic meters. The dual purpose of this enhancement is to minimize the dispersion of fine particulate matter into the environment and improve the efficiency of fume treatment processes.
The project required a seven-week production halt, during which hundreds of operators collaborated to ensure the plant’s full functionality and adherence to schedules.
”Despite the challenging circumstances faced by the steel industry, – commented Giovanni Pasini, President of Acciaierie di Calvisano – the company has not slowed down its investment plans. We are positive the continuity of our business depends not only on technological aspects or product quality but also on addressing a major challenge: remaining competitive on the global stage while reducing environmental impact and increasing value for all stakeholders, including the community and the territory where we were born over half a century ago and where we aim to continue producing the finest steel with the lowest possible impact.”
Renewable energy: a 3.9 MW photovoltaic system to power the steel mill
Alongside this, Acciaierie di Calvisano has invested in the installation of a 3.9 MW photovoltaic plant, consisting of 7,127 panels distributed across rooftops and land at the company’s headquarters. This innovative infrastructure marks a significant step towards decarbonization by providing clean energy.
The photovoltaic system is capable of generating substantial energy, allowing the steel mill to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 2,700 tons annually, contributing to combating climate change and supporting the energy transition.
EMAS certification: acknowledgment of environmental commitment
In addition to structural interventions, Acciaierie di Calvisano has achieved EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certification, a European-recognized standard for organizations that voluntarily adhere to higher environmental criteria. This certification not only guarantees transparency and accountability to stakeholders but also demonstrates Feralpi Group's continuous commitment to a more sustainable future.
EMAS certification requires a rigorous approach to managing natural resources and minimizing environmental impact, with constant monitoring of environmental parameters and the preparation of an annual environmental statement to report on performance.
Towards a sustainable and innovative future
The €13 million investment represents a critical milestone for Acciaierie di Calvisano and Feralpi Group in their journey towards a sustainable and technologically advanced production model. These initiatives are part of a broader sustainability strategy encompassing the entire Group, aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.
Through these investments, Acciaierie di Calvisano reaffirms its leadership in the steel industry in Italy and Europe, merging innovation and sustainability in the steelmaking sector.
