“Young people are the future of metalworking”: Giada Castelnuovo at a key industry event

The metalworking and manufacturing sector is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by innovation, sustainability, and new skills. In a context where companies must face increasingly complex challenges, training and the integration of young people into the workforce become key elements in ensuring competitiveness and growth.
These were the central discussion topics at the “Communication: Art or Work?” event. The session was organized by Confartigianato Imprese Lecco and Confartigianato Imprese Como, local branches of the Italian association for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which support and promote craftsmanship and manufacturing industries, at the Fondazione Lariofiere congress and exposition center (Como, Italy). The meeting, moderated by journalist Alessia Peretti, involved over 280 high school students, offering them a unique opportunity to discuss innovation, skills, and new opportunities.
Among the speakers, Giada Castelnuovo, sales representative of the drawing die manufacturer Oreste Castelnuovo, shared her experience in the world of SMEs, emphasizing the importance of training young people in both specific and transversal skills, which are essential for addressing the challenges of today’s market.
"The metalworking sector is constantly evolving. Today, having a solid technical foundation is not enough; adaptability, problem-solving skills, and an innovation-oriented mindset are also needed. Young people represent the future of our industry, and it is essential to support them in this growth journey."
During the presentation, key topics such as the impact of new technologies on business dynamics, the growing focus on sustainability, and the importance of effective communication—both within companies and towards customers—were addressed. "A major advantage of SMEs in the metalworking industry is their flexibility. This allows them to quickly adapt to changes and offer young people a dynamic environment where they can experiment and grow professionally," Castelnuovo added.
Psychological health at work
A brief yet meaningful discussion was also dedicated to the topic of psychological well-being, a pressing issue for younger generations. "We live in an era that rewards perfection, and this can create pressure and insecurity. It is important for companies, even in the metallurgical sector, to create work environments that support employees’ fulfillment, fostering a balance between productivity and personal growth," commented Castelnuovo. "Companies can be viewed as spaces for both professional and personal growth. Investing in training and innovation is key to securing a strong future for the entire sector."
In a time of great change, opening a dialog between schools and the business world is becoming increasingly crucial. Events like this represent an opportunity to bring young people closer to the manufacturing industry, showing them the endless possibilities that the metalworking and manufacturing sector can offer.
