Hyperion Materials & Technologies, a prominent global materials science company specializing in advanced hard and super-hard materials for diverse industries, celebrated the inauguration of its latest production facility in Martorelles, near Barcelona, Spain.
The expansion of the existing carbide sintering plant and research center in this territory marks a significant step. Indeed, it is projected to boost the production capacity of cemented carbide base materials and components by 60%, reaching over 500 tons annually.
The project, which began its construction works in July 2022, enlarged the site from 11,650 square meters to 16,900 square meters. This extension primarily focuses on manufacturing can tooling systems, wire drawing die blanks, and wear components. Notably, it enables the production of all tungsten carbide rolls supplied to the steel industry for manufacturing long steel products through the hot rolling process, like tubes, bars, rebar, etc. It also contributes to the Spanish job market with the addition of approximately 20 skilled manufacturing positions, developing Hyperion's Spanish base which counts about 400 of its 2,100 global associates.
Martorelles is also home to Hyperion's world-class carbide R&D team, emphasizing materials science and continuous innovation.
“This expansion represents a critical point in Hyperion’s commitment to protecting our customers’ supply chains and optimizing our ability to meet our customers’ needs throughout Europe and the world,” said Ron Voigt, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperion. “We are thrilled to continue our decades-long investment in Spain and look forward to even more success for our dedicated team members and the Barcelona region. The decision to invest here is the result of the performance of our team and the extraordinary support of our business partners.”
The project received partial funding from the Catalan Institute of Finance (ICF) of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government).
