A mild downturn for the American steel industry

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has recently announced the release of its 2022 Annual Statistical Report (ASR), which offers comprehensive data on the American steel industry as well as select data on the North American steel industry as a whole.

According to the report, domestic steel mill shipments in 2022 amounted to 89.5 million net tons (NT), showing a 5.5 percent decrease from the previous year. Raw steel production in the United States also declined by 6.2 percent, totaling 94.7 million net tons in 2022. The report indicates a 2.0 percent decrease in total steel imports into the United States, while finished steel imports saw an 11.0 percent increase and captured a 24 percent share of apparent steel consumption. Notably, the construction and automotive industries remained the primary end-use markets for U.S. steel products.

The AISI ASR report is a comprehensive resource covering the American steel industry, as well as statistical data on the Canadian, Mexican, and global steel industries. It includes various charts, graphs, and statistical highlights on shipments, imports, employment, raw steel production, and more, over a 10-year period.
