A glimpse at the North American manufacturing industry

The U.S. manufacturing sector is showing signs of weakening in recent months. According to Reuters, the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers' Index) declined to 46.0 last month, the lowest reading since May 2020, signaling the eighth consecutive month of manufacturing contraction, the longest stretch since the Great Recession. While some industries, such as transportation equipment, demonstrate areas of resilience with solid demand for goods, the overall manufacturing sector remains struggling for the moment. Manufacturing accounts for 11.1% of the economy and contracted at a 5.3% annualized rate in the first quarter. It must be said that a moderate decline in economic activities could have beneficial effects on some of the inflationary pressures. All in all: “The backbone of the American economy remains robust” (quoting Fortune).
