Focus on martensitic stainless steels

The International Stainless Steel Forum has published an interesting brochure on martensitic stainless steel.
Martensitic is one of the three types of stainless steel (together with ferritic and austenitic).
This type of steel is usually tempered and hardened. It has a relatively high carbon content (0.1 - 1.2%) compared to other stainless steels and a chromium content between 11% and 18%.

Most kitchen cutlery is made from martensitic stainless steel! And martensitic steel is used to produce medical tools and in aerospace and engineering, too, thanks to its renowned corrosion resistance and its high mechanical properties at room temperature.

Unlike other stainless steel families, the strength of martensitic stainless steels can be adjusted by heat treatment, so they're widely used in industrial applications.

Despite the instability in the raw material market, martensitic stainless steel has quite stable prices thanks to its constituents: besides iron, there's mainly chromium and nickel. The quotations of chromium have historically been relatively stable, and the nickel content ranges from 0 to 5% (for the special grades).
