Italian steel industry leads Europe in decarbonization and scrap usage

The Italian steel industry has emerged as a frontrunner in Europe regarding decarbonization and circularity, according to the fifth edition of the Sustainability Report by Federacciai, the Italian Steel Federation. The report highlights Italy's position as the top EU market for electric furnace steel production and the G7's leading country in terms of per capita electric furnace steel production.

Green steel leadership made in Italy

Approximately 80% of investments made by Italian steel companies are focused on efficiency, digitalization, environmental stewardship, and safety. Since 1990, the sector has been committed to reducing its specific CO2 emissions by 60% and its energy consumption by over 33% since 2000.

Italian steelmaking - says Federacciai - stands out as the most virtuous in the EU due to its low carbon intensity and high energy efficiency, with performance 40% better than the European average.

The sustainability report reveals that over 85% of Italian steel production is achieved by recycling ferrous scrap. Italian steel mills rank first in the EU in terms of recycling volumes, with over 76% of waste generated from steelmaking processes being sent for recovery.

As global demand for eco-friendly steel rises, Italian producers are poised to capitalize on their edge in sustainability and responsible practices.
