Navigating the hydrogen pipes market in preparation for Tube 2024

In this article, we seek to provide an exploration of the pivotal role of hydrogen in Europe's ambitious roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with a specific emphasis on the use of tubes and pipes in the hydrogen industry. As the Tube 2024 event in Düsseldorf draws near, we offer valuable insights into the application of tubes and pipes across hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and distribution, alongside the challenges encountered in material research. Join us on a journey through the evolving landscape of sustainable energy solutions and the integral role of pipes and tubes in shaping a hydrogen-powered future.

Tube industry’s contribution and challenges in advancing hydrogen infrastructure

In recent years, the global commitment to carbon neutrality has spurred a heightened focus on sustainable energy sources. Hydrogen, in particular, has emerged as a linchpin in the quest for a cleaner and more efficient industrial world. However, the challenges associated with this quest are manifold, ranging from production to storage and transportation. A robust network of hydrogen pipelines and advanced plant technologies is crucial to ensure the seamless integration of this resource into our energy systems. Needless to say, the pipe industry is essential in providing the technologies and materials required for safe and efficient hydrogen transport.

Tubes serve as essential components for various applications throughout the hydrogen value chain. Their versatility and strength make them ideal for handling the high pressures and cryogenic temperatures associated with hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and distribution. Seamless tubes, often preferred for their weld-free construction, are commonly utilized in these applications.

Tubes in hydrogen production

In hydrogen production facilities, tubes are employed in high-pressure piping systems that convey hydrogen from the electrolyzers or reforming units to storage tanks. These tubes must be made from materials that can withstand the corrosive effects of hydrogen and the harsh operating conditions within the production plant.

Tubes for hydrogen storage

Tubes are extensively used in pressurized hydrogen storage systems, particularly for large-capacity applications such as stationary storage tanks and fueling stations. These tubes are typically made from high-strength steel or composite materials that can withstand the high pressures required for efficient hydrogen storage.

Tubes in hydrogen transportation

Hydrogen tube trailers play a significant role in transporting hydrogen from production facilities to refueling stations and end-use applications. These trailers typically utilize high-pressure tubes made from materials such as stainless steel or composite materials, chosen for their ability to withstand the high pressures required for the safe transportation of compressed hydrogen gas. Tube trailers are not the only option. For very large-scale transportation, pipelines may be preferred. Additionally, cryogenic transport using liquid hydrogen is another option.

Tubes in hydrogen distribution

Within fueling stations and other hydrogen distribution networks, tubes serve as the primary means of transferring hydrogen from storage tanks to fueling nozzles or downstream applications. These tubes are typically made from materials compatible with the type of hydrogen distribution system, such as aluminum for cryogenic systems or stainless steel for pressurized systems.

EU and non-EU standards for hydrogen tubes

Leading the way in hydrogen investments, the European community has established stringent standards for the production and control of hydrogen tubes, enforced through testing and certifications from accredited bodies. Different regulations apply depending on the specific type and end application of the tubes. Other major economies like the US, Japan, China, and Canada have their own sets of standards for hydrogen tubes, which may differ from those of the EU in terms of specific requirements, testing procedures, and enforcement mechanisms.

Materials challenges in hydrogen infrastructures: overcoming embrittlement

In this context, it is worth saying a word in favor of the concept of “hydrogen embrittlement”, which poses a significant challenge to the integrity and reliability of tubes and pipes used in hydrogen infrastructure. Hydrogen embrittlement occurs when atomic hydrogen permeates the metal lattice of tube materials, rendering them brittle and prone to cracking under stress. The susceptibility to this phenomenon varies based on factors such as material composition, manufacturing processes, and operating conditions. Effectively mitigating hydrogen embrittlement necessitates careful material selection, coatings, and operational parameters, alongside continuous monitoring and maintenance protocols to uphold the long-term integrity of hydrogen pipelines and equipment. Consequently, research into hydrogen-optimized steels is paramount, with numerous companies investing in this endeavor to address the challenge.

Tube 2024 ready for the hydrogen market

To quote the statement on the subject from Messe Düsseldorf, ‘there’s a lot in the pipeline’, and the Tube 2024 show to be hosted as a co-located event with wire 2024 from April 15 to 19, will serve as the ideal platform to showcase the latest advancements in the sector and provide a glimpse into the future of hydrogen.
