A breakthrough solution for wire/cable/tube surface defect detection
For many years, manufacturers have been offering measuring devices based on non-contact laser measurement for geometric monitoring of wire and cable. The measurement of the outer diameter, the calculation of the ovality, the detection of shape defects such as lumps & necks are part of the traditional measurements.
As diameters become smaller and speeds become faster, many devices are limited in performance by their technology. An even more difficult technical challenge is the inspection of the surface appearance and detection of surface defects on cylindrical products during production. Measuring techniques and equipment do exist, but they are often either dedicated to offline measurement of samples or to in-line measurements, but limited to diameters of several mm or even cm and at low speeds. Until now, there has been a lack of equipment capable of detecting defects that may appear on the surface of wire/cable/tube during the drawing or extrusion process, particularly for products with very small diameters and high speeds.
This demand from manufacturers for zero-defect production and minimal scrap has led CERSA to fill this gap by developing a new high-performance measuring device: the SQM. It is truly an innovative, patented instrument that has been developed to meet customers’ needs for continuous monitoring of the surface quality of fine wire/cable/tube.
The SQM offers high-resolution and real-time surface defect detection with 200,000 images per second, such as scratches, die marks, or defects like impurities, bubbles or particles on the insulation. These defects are then displayed on PC software for customer analysis and characterization. It works like a “ring camera” all around the circumference of a cylindrical object. The image is analyzed in real-time by powerful algorithms in order to provide all necessary information about defects, such as their length, width, surface, and location. It also enables real-time detection to identify and isolate the causes and generates alarms according to the customer's parameters.
Using the SQM on your lines will provide many benefits, as it:
- enhances the final quality;
- saves in raw materials;
- drastically reduces waste;
- increases your productivity;
- achieves higher standards and outperforms the competition.
The SQM was developed to focus on very fine dimensions: wire diameter from 2000μm down to 20 μm! The technology is particularly suited to detect and characterize defects on:
- metal wires with a reflective surface (steel, copper, gold, silver);
- drawn products and certain extruded products;
- enameled wires, plated wires, and some insulated wires.
