Forming and extrusion lubricants: an overall perspective

Mechanical deformation processes, known as metal forming, change the shape of a workpiece without adding or removing material. A correct lubrication is fundamental to perform operations such as rolling, extrusion, forming, or stretching. Indeed, too much friction would excessively stress both the workpiece and the machinery, resulting in undesirable defects and uneven tool consumption, which may lead to a shorter tool life. Boundary lubricants excel in reducing direct metal-to-metal contact by creating a protective layer between the workpiece and the tools, minimizing friction and wear. Extreme pressure (EP) lubricants, on the other hand, are formulated to handle more demanding conditions, such as high loads and temperatures. They contain additives that form a protective layer under extreme pressure, preventing welding or seizure of metal surfaces. Industries spanning automotive manufacturing, aerospace, construction, and metalworking heavily rely on these lubricants. Each sector has distinct needs for industrial lubricants and oils, ranging from intricate precision in aerospace components to the robustness demanded by heavy machinery in construction. Forming and extrusion lubricants, therefore, not only enhance process efficiency and end-product quality but also uphold the integrity of machinery and tools across diverse industrial landscapes.
