A closer look at ABS departments: the Area Energy Management team

Energy is the main conversion cost of a steel mill. At ABS, a dedicated Area Energy Management team is tasked to deal with energy costs, by suggesting energy efficiency measures, negotiating the best contract terms, and maintaining relations with the relevant trade associations.

The energy sector has undergone major shifts in the last decade as a result of the development of renewables sources and increased environmental awareness, and the team's primary purpose is to find the best way to cope with these changes.

ABS is also ISO 50001 certified: this standard provides for the maintenance of an energy management system with a view to continuous improvement. In addition to electricity and natural gas, the Area Energy Management also deals with the Emissions Trading System and technical gases (Oxygen, Argon, and Nitrogen).
