A closer look at ABS departments: the scrap yard
ABS production begins in the scrap yard: it is here that every day more than 5,000 tons of scrap iron and cast iron are stored and handled. The quality of the incoming material is assessed by the classifiers, who decide whether it will be accepted or rejected. By using magnetic overhead cranes, the operators will then load the scrap into the baskets feeding the EAF furnace or the Danarc furnace, following specific recipes of each customer.
The scrap yard currently has numerous projects underway, including METALID, an innovative system for scrap recognition, and QSYM2, which will allow the company to track the material along the whole production chain. A new automated entrance portal for wagons and a scrap treatment plant are also under construction.
The steel making company ABS was established in 1988, by the merging of two well-known Italian steel companies, Officine Bertoli and Acciaierie Safau. Ever since its inception, ABS has been focusing on technological innovation and sustainability.
