New Sfere plant to mark ABS first steps into the grinding media market
ABS is thrilled to announce the start-up of the new Sfere plant at the Danieli steel mill in Cargnacco (Udine, Italy).
The new innovative plant, which is the result of a 25 million euro investment, will enable ABS to step into an entirely new production area: the grinding media market. The steel balls produced in the Sfere plant will be covering a size range from 30 to 150 mm, and are destined for the mining industries of South America, South Africa, and Eastern Europe.
The end goal is to manufacture customized steel balls with mechanical properties tailored to each customer. This will be possible thanks to a meticulous process control covering all phases, from the selection of the scrap used as raw material to the steel casting and bar rolling.
The product is now undergoing strict strength and durability tests. Once the testing period is over, the company will then start the actual production, aiming for a production target of 150,000 tons per year.
